Crowns

Crowns, also know as caps, are most often placed:

1. after a root canal
2. over a dental implant post
3. if your tooth has a large filling
4. if your tooth is broken
5. if your tooth is badly out of occlusion (out of line)
6. if your tooth is badly stained

Crowns can be made of gold, ceramic, or porcelain fused to metal or zirconium. The ceramic and porcelain fused to metal or zirconium crowns look like natural teeth. Preparations for a crown include:

1. making an impression (mold) of your teeth
2. preparing the tooth for the crown
3. taking another impression of the prepared tooth
4. Placing a temporary crown while the final crown is sculpted by the dental laboratory
5. Removal of the temporary crown and cementing of the final crown
